06/13/2005: "the olfactory walk"
Loreen wrote this about last thursday's walk:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
North from Old Mill along the Humber- it was full of splendid smells wafting
from the muddy banks of the river, from trees, random BBQs, dogs, fragrant
bushes and the humid night air.
It was a walk that left the legs achy and feet sore, a gradual but constant
incline up, up, up. And with only four of us we set a good pace, except for
the few moments we sat on benches built into a well constructed wooden
bridge that moved us over the Humber from East to West. We sat there looking
into the black waters and contemplating light pollution and marveling at how
good it is to have access to such remote spaces in the middle of a
metropolis.
We ended the walk in an exclusive neighbourhood of seventies architecture
and lawn sprinklers somewhere near Scarlet Road and Eglington, once we
overcame our disorientation we made it to the Jane bus and the subway.
Luckily Sean (Mr. Efficiency Guide) was there to guide us onto the fifth car
and save our tired legs another few feet of walking in trying to find the
best exit from our respective stops.
