HanlansAfterStorm

Today I went to Toronto Island because there is no internet there and it's easier to do some reading I had to do than it is near a computer. The usually clean and clear Hanlan's Point beach had a continious belt of debris on it from last weekend's storm. Mostly sticks and some big branches (even a few trees) - but there was some artificial material in it - bottles and other gunk - so it wasn't so nice. The stuff on Hanlan's must be from the Humber River. Over on the Spacing Wire, somebody sent in a picture of the Black Creek washing away part of Finch . I bet some of the stuff on Hanlan's came from up there.

The night of the storm, Todd and I stood on the Gerrard Street Bridge and watched the Don as it flowed freely over the DVP and Bayview Avenue. We were on our bikes. Watching people stop their cars, run out with their engines running and doors left open, was as fascinating as watching the Don's crazy flow, complete with pieces of construction signs and lots of branches. "That's a lot of water" they would say.

Re. Finch - I remember we walked along Black Creek on our York University walk, though not at this point (only north and south of it). I bet that rickety hand-made wooden bridge we crossed on got washed away. I wonder how long it will take for someone to build a new one? It's frightening to think of that whole valley we were walking in at the edge of YorkU, just north of the washout, being filled with water.

All that can be found anywhere can be found in Toronto.
