01/30/2006: "Student Psychogeography"

Last week I had my two OCAD Interaction Design classes go on a "algorithmic walk" based on the walks the Social Fiction folks took, where basic instructions determine direction through the city. Much like this:

first street right
second street left
first street left
repeat

It takes choice away from the walkers, and leads them in directions they might not otherwise take. I had each group make a map as they went along, inspired in part by Marlena Zuber's [murmur] maps. I didn't give much instruction, just plot their route, and record some impressions of what they see. The starting point was OCAD, but they could head north or south. Some made their maps after they returned, while others submitted their "field maps".

These next three are part of the same map.

All that can be found anywhere can be found in Toronto.
